The stump is gone but the roots are a problem. Maybe they are lifting your sidewalk or cracking your driveway. Maybe you are putting in a pool and the root zone has to be cleared. Maybe you want a foundation over the spot where the tree used to stand. Root removal is its own service, different from stump grinding. You are in the right place.
When You Need Root Removal
Root removal is needed when the stump itself is not the only issue. Common situations: surface roots lifting sidewalks, patios, or driveways (live oak surface roots are notorious for this in Tallahassee); new construction over a stump location where lateral roots interfere with foundations or utility trenches; pool installation requiring a clear root zone; raised bed or garden work where old roots compete with new plantings; and driveway cuts where lateral roots extend into the drive path. Root removal is also sometimes the right call when a tree is still standing but its surface roots are causing problems, though in that case we evaluate whether the tree can survive partial root removal before proceeding.
Our Root Removal Process
We start with an ISA Certified Arborist assessment, because removing roots from around a live tree affects the tree's stability and health. For roots from an already-removed tree, the arborist assessment focuses on extent of the root zone and interference with your project. We use targeted grinding for smaller roots, mechanical excavation for larger lateral roots, and hand work around utilities. Most lateral roots within 4 to 6 feet of a stump can be handled with extended grinding after the main stump is removed. Roots extending further out (which is typical for mature oaks) require separate tracking and removal. We locate all utilities before starting, work systematically through the root zone, and grade the area when done.
Root Removal Cost in Tallahassee
Root removal cost depends on root zone size, root count and diameter, access, and whether this is grinding-only or combined with stump removal. A few surface roots lifting a sidewalk is one level of work. A full root zone clearance for pool installation is a different scope. Factors include utility avoidance requirements, whether the tree is still standing (more complex), and cleanup volume. Free on-site estimates with written quotes, and we are transparent about which roots we recommend removing versus leaving.
