Your palm is shedding brown fronds and dropping seed pods on the car. It needs a trim. But you have seen the "hurricane cut" palms around town where the fronds are shaved up to a pencil point at the top, and you know that is wrong. We trim palms the right way. You are in the right place.

When You Need Palm Tree Trimming

Palms need periodic trimming to remove dead fronds, old seed stalks, and brown frond tips. Signs yours is due: brown fronds hanging at the bottom of the canopy, seed pods heavy enough to damage cars or walkways, visible trunk above the lowest green fronds (a sign of serious self-shedding or old neglect), and old boots (remnant frond bases on sabal palm trunks) starting to peel. Palm species matter. Sabal palms (Florida's state tree) shed cleanly and often need only light work. Queen palms and Washington palms shed messy fronds and seed pods that need regular cleanup. Date palms produce heavy seed stalks that must come off. Never cut palms above the horizontal plane of the green fronds. That is the hurricane cut and it weakens the entire tree.

Our Palm Tree Trimming Process

An ISA certified arborist or trained palm specialist trims the palm to ISA standards: remove only fronds that have browned significantly, remove seed pods and seed stalks, and leave all green fronds below the horizontal (9 and 3 o'clock on a clock face). Over-trimming removes the palm's food production and stresses the central bud, which is the growing point. For tall palms like Washingtons over 40 feet, we use bucket trucks or climbing spurs with appropriate gear. Climbing spurs are not used on species where they damage the trunk (like queen palms). Trimmed material is hauled away because palm fronds cannot be chipped in standard chippers.

Palm Tree Trimming Cost in Tallahassee

Palm trimming cost depends on palm species, height, and accessibility. Short sabal palms are inexpensive. Tall Washington palms or Canary Island date palms with heavy crowns cost more due to bucket truck needs and longer work time. Factors include how many palms are being trimmed in one visit (we discount for batched work), seed pod removal complexity, and disposal of fibrous material. Free on-site estimates and we will tell you honestly when a palm does not need trimming yet.
